Patrick Mahomes Weeks 12 and 13 film reviews; A tale of two games
We've taken a few weeks off. Let's talk about Mahomes' most recent film, with two very different games.
You know the drill. Every week (well, most weeks) I’ll be charting every dropback by Patrick Mahomes this year, just like I’ve done for… well, his whole career. As I laid out in the Week 1 film review (which is unlocked so you can see the methodology in more detail), statistical analysis of quarterbacks, especially in small sample sizes, doesn’t really tell us the whole story or even most of it. So I chart things that the QB can control, such as accuracy, pocket presence, franchise throws, going through reads, and more.
It’s been a few weeks (sorry), but we’re back!
The Mahomes film reviews have been on hold the last several weeks as several other things have jumped to the forefront, some real life and some just football stuff (like charting DJ Humphries’ 3rd down pass protection snaps when the Chiefs signed him). But much like Mahomes has in recent weeks after a rather bumpy start, it’s time to get back on track!
Because it’s been three weeks, I’ve decided to combine the last two weeks’ worth of charting in this article. So we’ll look at Week 12 against Carolina and Week 13 against Vegas. The two games were pretty different for Mahomes himself as well as the team in general, but they did highlight why Brett Veach signed Humphries in order to try and shore up the pass protection. But we’ll come back to that.
First, it’s worth noting that Mahomes had two very different games against Carolina and Vegas. In one, he was basically mistake-free while operating the offense with ruthless efficiency. In the other, he made a TON of incredible throws but lost trust in the offense down the stretch in a way that resulted in the return of some uncharacteristic mistakes. But both (particularly Vegas, oddly enough) gave plenty of reasons to be bullish on the idea that the Chiefs are so close to putting it together on offense in a more consistent way.
So with that in mind as a preview, let’s talk Mahomes’ Week 12 and Week 13 film, with the numbers and what I believe to be the most important takeaways from each. One thing that’s certain? We’ve definitely started to take some of the crazy things Mahomes does for granted.
This throw is absolutely stupid in the most glorious possible way… and it might have been, like, his 3rd best throw of the day against Vegas despite the box score being less than incredible. Let’s talk film.
