Patrick Mahomes Week 8 film review: Close to perfect ball
Beyond the box score, the Chiefs QB played about as well as you can someone to play vs the Raiders
The NFL had its shot. And they might have blown it.
This year, Mahomes hasn’t quite been himself as the offense has dealt with a myriad of injuries. He had a few accuracy issues early, then some happy feet issues, and overall didn’t look as comfortable as he normally does. While he was still playing decently for a normal QB, it wasn’t up the standard fans have become used to over the last 6 seasons. And yet the Chiefs (on the back of a good defense, a grinding rushing attack, and Mahomes still making plays when they were needed the most) kept winning.
Following Week 7 against the Niners, I wrote about how Mahomes was playing quite a bit better despite the box score being anemic. Now, after reviewing the film against Vegas? I’m wondering if the NFL missed its chance to bury the Chiefs while Mahomes struggled. Because against the Raiders, Mahomes played about as well as you can ask your QB to play, looking completely comfortable within the offense all game.
The Chiefs had a couple of drives break down due to things outside of Mahomes’ control (penalties, drops, and a tipped pick, which we’ll talk about more shortly), and played a “short” game given the overall ball-control nature of the offense (8 meaningful drives). Because of that, even a solid box score doesn’t really reflect how well he played overall (his QBR being a very high 87.9, which appears to not take into account a pick that wasn’t on him, is much more accurate).
Let’s talk about Mahomes’ film vs the Raiders, because it’s fun to talk about. One might even say business got handled.
