Patrick Mahomes Week 4 film review; tearing up Tampa and (ahem) a guest appearance
Looking at every snap by Mahomes dissecting Tampa Bay's defense. Oh, and also charting every snap by Russ Wilson against the Colts. You know, for science.
Each week here, I’ll be reviewing every snap by Patrick Mahomes, charting things that gauge quarterback performance and measuring traits like accuracy, pocket presence, vision/awareness, playmaking, and ball protection. The idea is to quantify how the quarterback played beyond the box score and contextualize his play from supporting cast and scheme. You can find the terms and methodology here. This week, we’ll use the same methodology to break down Russ Wilson’s TNF performance.
Few things are more fun than charting an excellent Patrick Mahomes performance. Quantifying just how well Mahomes played, particularly against a tough opponent, is one of the things that makes this job so rewarding (along with finding little tidbits that we may have missed during the broadcast, such as how Mahomes was creating windows and protecting his receivers with superb ball placement).
But you know what else is fun? Contextualizing Mahomes and how well he plays the game. Every now and then, it’s good to take a look at how other QB’s perform utilizing the same method we use to break down Mahomes each week. I did it several years ago for The Athletic looking at guys like Brady, Brees, and Rodgers. I did it here recently, looking at Josh Allen’s divisional round performance against the Chiefs (spoiler; He was excellent, Mahomes was better).
And this week, I’m going to do that again. This time I’ve decided to chart every snap of Russ Wilson during Thursday night’s game against the Colts. Why? Well, the same reason we do most things here… either to learn something or have fun. You can decide which in this case. Maybe both.
So after the usual Mahomes review (where there were some interesting aspects to how he carved up a very good Bucs defense), I’ll post the charting numbers for Wilson and comment on what his film showed against the Colts.
If you are unfamiliar with how I chart and write about quarterback play, the (unlocked) Week 1 review explains the methodology and reasoning, as well as the definitions used. The goal, as ever, is to separate the QB’s play from what is around the QB to get a better gauge on how he did on his own. You can find the previous views by clicking the links below:
Let’s talk some Mahomes. Then some Wilson. I love this job.
