But, Seth, that last completion cost them a shot at a field goal. He should have just run out of bounds for Harrison. Said in my best three year-old voice.
By the way, I loved the fake punt in this game. Not just because it was awesome, but because it was so low risk. I mean, in the grand scheme of things, you are ahead, playing the Jets, and at midfield, so the defense is likely to stop them even if you fail because, well, the Jets. There was not really a downside.
And now every team we play knows we have that in the bag, and we should be able to get better releases and coverage from our gunners because nobody will want to be pantsed like that. Plus, if complacency were ever to be an issue, doing something like that to fire up the team put that to rest. We really are becoming the villains of the league.
My blood boils at why Lamar Jackson should ever be in the same conversation as Patrick Mahomes when it comes to stuff like this. PMII is better on 3rd down than anyone else on the first two downs. He is a treasure.
Jackson is an excellent QB in his own right with a very unique skillset. However, he also currently has some limitations that Mahomes simply doesn't have.
Watching every other team on third and more than four has become extremely frustrating for me. All I see are underneath throws that require serious YAC to get a conversion. It wasn't noticeable until Mahomes came along and started, you know, throwing it past the sticks. Granted that would be more dangerous for lesser talents, but one would think Rodgers, Wilson, and some of the others would at least try.
Seth, quit your day job and give us two or three of these everyday! Mahomes has cut my 3rd down anxiety by 85-90%. Because he is unfazed by 3rd and 15, he has dropped my 1st and 2nd down anxiety by 95%. Young Chiefs fans have no way to know the treasure he is. I just can't wait for Sundays!
You could save yourself a lot of time, Seth, by just breaking down all the reasons that Pat is NOT the best QB in recorded history. Watching Mahomes is appointment TV. Every. Single. Game.
I was listening to the Williamson and Peacock NFL podcast (formerly the Locked on NFL pod) today and they were saying how Russ is the clear cut MVP at the halfway point. And no other argument can be made. I admit I was kinda pissed. I love listening to those guys... but you gotta at least include Mahomes in the conversation.
It is what it is, you know? To be fair, Wilson has deserved more attention than he's gotten to this point, so we could see an over-correction. And he's been GREAT. It's just worth noting how much better Mahomes is on 3rd down.
That little flip to Mecole reminds me of the 2-point conversion. Hardman has quick hands and it seems like Mahomes realizes and takes advantage of that. Great read, Mr. Keysor.
Seth, Soren rattled off an astonishing list of comparative statistics today while interviewing Nate. The metrics were for the first 39 games of Brees, Brady and Mahomes. Patrick’s dominance was sublime. It would be great if you could print that list in this venue.
I had to check this out because I never remembered Brady (the so-called GOAT) being in one of those charts and I know I read it. It is unfortunate because Tom's numbers were pedestrian until the 2007 season. And that was such a jump that if this were baseball folks would be having a different kind of vitamin discussion about him. You know, the Hulk Hogan say your prayers take your vitamin types and not the pliability types.

Yep, this was the time to put that on film. Low risk situation, force teams to think about it.

Absolutely, he's unique in what he's willing to do on 3rd down, even compared to the very best.

haha if this place ever gets big enough, I just might.

It's the best show on earth, man

I was think the same. Two strong cases where Hardman has demonstrated incredibly quick and sure hands.
Mecole has excellent hands when he isn't thinking about YAC

I once wrote comparing Mahomes' start to his career vs a number of other great QB's. That table is in this article! https://theathletic.com/1824004/2020/05/20/film-work-reveals-patrick-mahomes-improved-in-several-key-areas-last-season/

How is Mahomes 1st in Y/A if he is 9.1 and Rogers is 10? Great article just confused by that stat.
Um....
(throws smoke bomb)
Lol. I caught that too. Wait... where's Seth?!
When it's 3'rd and 15, I always say, we've got'm right where we want them.
