Thanks, Seth. I remember being about 10 years old for the crazy Chargers-Dolphins playoff game and thinking, as long as I live, I will never see another game like this. (I was philosophical as a kid.) But I was wrong. Having a rooting interest and having my team win while being utterly spectacular took it even a notch higher. Fun times. Loved the review.
And man, that game was incredible to watch. I often wonder if I wouldn't have enjoyed it more without the rooting interest, though, as I was losing my mind from stress.
If there were another Seth Keysor (as if such a thing were possible) who happened to be a hardcore Bills fan it could be fascinating to get his take on this. And by "this" I mean both the game itself and Seth's analyses of the two QBs that day. I wonder how some of the biggest-brained folks with PFF and similar organizations would view it all...
Of course, if any of them disagreed with Seth about anything they would automatically be wrong. That goes without saying. Even though I just said it.
We all love Patrick so much and after 2018 I told anyone willing to listen that we would own the West (and potentially much more) until teams got their own version of him. After watching draft after draft this century filled with Geno Smith’s and others I can’t even remember the names of, I felt very safe. But I have been amazed at the recent QB crops that include several worthy challengers for Patrick. Herbert, Jackson, Burrow, Lawrence (?), Watson, Allen. Even Brady refuses to die!
If anyone is up for the competition it is the QB from Tyler, TX! But I so enjoy laughers.
This got me to thinking: right now there are huge bunches of 5- to 10-year-old kids who will grow up watching Mahomes and the others you mentioned, and they're all going to think that level of performance is just sort of par for the course. Not really a big deal.
A few of them will be NFL QBs, and I have to wonder, with that as a baseline for their expectations, is there even another level that some of them will get to? Hard as it is to imagine, the entire history of professional sports pretty much screams YES!!!!
Babe Ruth is still Babe Ruth. But the fact is that most of his records have been broken by now. That's not a negative reflection on the Bambino, that's just the way it generally works.
He was one of my favorite versatile defensive players but, in the small samples I've seen here and there and the games watched games, the Honey Badger looked like he might of lost a step or two. I think I can see why the Chiefs wanted a bigger safety.
There was a lot of frustration from him last year, and honestly I can see why with some of the miscues by his teammates on the back end. I think that caused some hesitation from him. It wouldn't surprise me if he had an incredible year in '22.
You promised this and you delivered! Definitely worth waiting for this read. And confirms the eye test of that game. Interesting but not surprising about Allen being a little more comfortable in the pocket.
I like the little things you do to help us "see" the point you are making. Like the yellow "blip" of circles on our secondary where they left the deep shot open. Or other times where you do the same highlight to the player pre-snap. Like you say, both QB's played a heck of a game. I was there and I am sure I was close to a coronary multiple times. When your defense runs into each other or falls down I'm sure it makes their (QB's) job easier even without the gift wrap.
About the DBs’ mayhem, this article made me think this game may have been a tipping point that led Brett to focus so heavily on the secondary in the draft. 🤔
But we will still have Spags planning, coaching and calling the defense so I won't be expecting much. We'll be a middling 20ish D and there's far more of a chance we'll be one of the absolute worst (hopefully not historically again) than we will of being a top 10.
A "compare and contrast" between Williams and Orlando might turn out to be pretty depressing. But it would also be highly informative. I remain unconvinced that Orlando is any better than an average NFL LT.
But that may be enough. Let's remember that the Chiefs managed to put 51 on the board in a game with Cam Erving (!!!!) at LT, despite multiple turnovers. If Orlando and his rookie agent decide to play REALLY hard to get, I think it's safe to say the Chiefs have other options that are better than Cam.
Is Orlando so irrational as to sit out games at a loss of $1M per when at that point, nothing can alter his salary for 2022? 😬. Hope we don’t have to find out.
Awesome observations. You are the BEST!!
You are way too kind, appreciate you!

Also remember that game - big Fouts fan - deserved a SB
That's a KILLER reference for a bananas game.

This was such a fun read, and a great exercise to put a ridiculous game into context. Thanks for putting in the extra work on this one, Seth!
Glad you enjoyed!

It'd be tough, because I'd be wrong, but I'm never wrong, and so by disagreeing with myself I think the universe would implode or something.
You need to put that on a plaque over your fireplace. I'd put it over my fireplace but that would be weird.
Weird, or very cool? It's hard to say...
I have a saying I've been using for years:
Once I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.
So you’re saying Patrick has a chance?! 😉

The young QB group is insanely good right now, it's crazy.

So it's settled then. Pat is Football Jesus. Can't wait for my grandkids to tell their kids and grandkids about the Legend of Mahomes.
They won't believe it!

It will be interesting to see if he continues to make the same sort of on-field "business decisions" that we all observed last season.
This was a great read. Always great to see how mahomes’s greatness compares to other great performances.
Glad you enjoyed, and it's definitely interesting!
<<From all appearances, Allen did pretty much everything possible for his part to win in Kansas City.>>
He did call tails

Thanks Krystal! And it's something Allen has clearly dedicated a ton of time to correcting, because that wasn't always the case for him.

I believe those are called "suboptimal performances." I had other names for them but, well, y'know.....
But we will still have Spags planning, coaching and calling the defense so I won't be expecting much. We'll be a middling 20ish D and there's far more of a chance we'll be one of the absolute worst (hopefully not historically again) than we will of being a top 10.
Just great. It is really useful to see the other side's pluses and minuses to keep everything in perspective.
Please consider doing this type of article more frequently whenever the Chiefs are in their slow season.
I enjoy it very much! Perhaps doing something with Trent Williams (or another elite-level tackle) might be interesting for people next...

Meh...that game was okay i guess
It didn't stink.
