Did I, maybe, just maybe, see Chris Jones "bend" around the edge on that 2nd sack? Was it Derrick Thomas bend? Of course not, but that snap should strike fear deep in the hearts of many an offensive tackle.
You're on to something with Mahomes needing to learn to make more subtle in-pocket movements. Peyton Manning mastered this trait. His feet were always twitching a little, moving a few inches here, a few there. Mahomes is a phenomenon -- this generation's MJ at QB. He'll adapt fast. But, relearning this will take a few games because he's had YEARS of working with shaky offensive lines. Your reviews from his Tech days showed he was running for his life during some of those games.
No one should be irritated by your suggestion that Pat isn't perfect. It's actually encouraging that a man who walks on quarterbacking water can verifiably get even better.
And you're right, Seth. Calling watching Pat play QB a job is a bit of a stretch. Fortunately for us, you take your job seriously. I look forward to the weekly QB reviews more than any other Chiefs coverage. Great work, as always.
These are my favorite articles too! I heard you say there were fewer clicks on these last season. That is bad form for Chiefs fans. We have, IMHO, the best to ever play and we need to enjoy the ride. Those of us who have been around the longest most certainly do, I am positive of that.
mangery denotes being born in a manger or perhaps a skin disease. manAgery is more like how someone manages (if not a misspelling of menagerie).
Great article as usual. The gifs really illustrate exactly what you are talking about. I don't see this stuff anywhere else.
Hope you had a good trip to KC with your kids. They certainly had a great comeback to watch with a fired-up crowd. That must be quite an experience for them.
I wil never, ever get tired of reading about the objective greatness of Patrick Mahomes. And I too had some doubts about Chris Jones playing on the edge. I’m so happy to be wrong on that one.
Seth, great work as usual. NEVER apologize for critiquing our players. Mahomes is not perfect and we are not delusional. Amazing that he can reach an even higher level of play. Your writing is a pleasure to read. Go Chiefs!!!
Working on taxes. What a pleasant distraction this was. Not real happy about you calling Patrick mangy but overall, excellent work Seth. Thank you so much.
Hey Seth, I know you factor out plays where Mahomes chucks it knowing he has a defensive procedure penalty (not penalizing him) but do you give him credit for the completions? I couldn't tell
You do a good job of balancing the marvel we all feel when Mahomes plays the game with your constructive criticism of the nuances he needs to sharpen up.
I think you'll see as he gets a bit older he'll start to make more subtle moves in the pocket to help his linemen out. That being said he's three years in and it's been a known issue since he entered the league. Time to start hitting your drop depth and stepping up into the pocket consistently, and I think an improved interior OL will go a long way to help him do that.
Great analysis Seth! What I enjoyed most with Mahomes is how he has another level he kicks it to when needed. Doesn’t panic and makes plays. That’s the key difference between him and Mayfield, Allen etc. Browns fans hope Baker comes through but doesn’t in the big situations. Chiefs fans now expect Mahomes will and does.
Great article again. I would love to see a breakdown of Chris Jones' snaps vs Baltimore. My first impression is that they bullied him quite a bit but that may be bias from when it was pointed out on the broadcast.
Great write-up, as usual, Seth!

And I agree, it's a crazy notion to think about the fact that Mahomes could be even better than he is.

I imagined him setting up a Christmas display on the sidelines.
Just think if Jones had help form , say ...Clark or Okafor. Imagine that.

Anybody remember what his potential INT was? The one that I remember was nullified because of an offsides, which wouldn’t count according to Seth

I think he was put in an awful position given his skillset and what the Ravens force DE's to do, tbh.
That said, other teams will mimic that read option stuff vs him with a mobile QB as long as Spags doesn't have him commit to the QB or the RB.
