We're back to charting every single dropback by the Chiefs star QB. Let's talk about how this process works, and about a game that had some ups and downs.
Excellent analysis as usual. Just chalk this game up to a fluke game. Weirdly, with all the drops and misses we still should have beat a pretty good football team.
I appreciate the distinction of accuracy vs. placement as it relates to zone coverage. I would have just labeled it a bad pass without knowing all the different factors that go into a throw like that.
Totally agree with your take, Seth. Mahomes made a couple more mistakes than is his norm, which exacerbated the drops. And the mistakes and drops where mostly at key moments. Weird game. Thanks for the in depth look at the pass thru the zone to KT.
Terrific analysis, Seth. This is far more helpful than looking at traditional stats in a box score. And thanks for including your past years’ stats so that we can compare them side by side.
Our receivers’ 6 drops were obviously troubling. Until I saw your article, I didn’t know what a “normal” number of drops for the Chiefs might be. I see that it has consistently been between 2.4 and 2.8 in the other three years you analyzed. That’s a good baseline number for us to keep in mind as we watch future games.
Are there any league-wide available stats that show how the Chiefs’ drop rate compares to other teams’ rates?
The comparison to 2021 is interesting. We tend to forget that Mahomes, in addition to adjusting to a new WR group, also has two new starting tackles. Even if they prove to be an upgrade over last year, it will still take some time to get comfortable with their sets and techniques. The combination may be enough to speed him up a half second. Hopefully it evens out with more reps.
If you told me, "The Chiefs will have 3 TOs including a muffed punt, plus 7 penalties for 55 yards before halftime - what's the score?" I definitely wouldn't have said "7-6 Chiefs". And we get the kickoff to start the second half. This defense is legit!
P.S. Ya know Seth, none of this stuff happened before you named your podcast "Only Weird Games". Just sayin...
My favorite articles are these reviews. Ultimately, this team's success is in Patrick's hands. The offense is certainly not in sync this season. I look forward to your PM review this week. Without seeing the all-22, I can only guess that zones are tighter in the short and intermediate areas as teams are taking away what made hay a year ago (or our receivers lack experience in finding the holes). Thank you so very much for shining a light!

Most definitely. And it’s really hard to see without the All-22.
We've been together since we were excited to see what Brodie Croyle could do.

Love the analysis as always Seth! Crossing my fingers you have time to do all 17 games this year! :D
