Thank you for this. On a side note, Gamepass in Europe on Chrome looks no different than last season. I don't know about the all 22, is still quite early for that but everything else is the same

That's very interesting...

No all 22 view but the live game experience is the same as it has been.

Jeez, what took so long lol. Do you worry that Brown's susceptibility to the speed rush and Mahomes's tendency to drop too deep may be an issue? Even Fisher and Schwartz would "give up" sacks with some of Pat's drops and they seemed more mobile.

Possibly. But I think part of the reason Mahomes dropped so deep was that he didn't trust the interior line, which, at least initially, appears to be much stronger this year. But I'd be curious to hear Seth's thoughts as well.

It depends on how the interior holds up. Mahomes showed hesitancy stepping up the last couple of years, and the interior was really hard to trust. If it's more trustworthy this year my guess is that he more resembles his better games in that area, where he might take deep drops but then doesn't hesitate to climb in the pocket.

Good point, there were some games last season you just had no idea if you were gonna get 1 second or 2 seconds to throw lol

Correct, and it showed that Mahomes felt the same way!

The question for me is this: Is Mahomes better in the pocket or dropping deep? He can't scramble as much from the pocket.

Expand full comment

No-brainer here. He’s better not having an extra 10-15 yards on his throws being just getting back to the line of scrimmage. He certainly can scramble from the pocket—and has—but that’s not the point of playing QB, it’s to find the open receiver. If he has time to do that in the pocket, his ability to scramble doesn’t matter. If he’s having to scramble, the chances of a good pass go down. Backyard football is fun to watch, but not a good practice to have to constantly engage in.

Any QB is generally better with a good pocket because it allows them to really scan the field rather than focusing on the rush. Additionally, even a QB who is great at moving outside the pocket (which Mahomes is) opens up new rush lanes and invites pressure from other angles when he leaves the pocket.

The thing about scrambling from the pocket is that rush lanes do still exist, and arguably might be even better because you're not having to run 10+ yards to even get to the line of scrimmage.

Man, when do you sleep? 🙂 Thanks for putting in the time to break this down for us. It may only be preseason, but football is back!!

As another ex-KC resident Chiefs fan, I’ll second how much I hate the changes to gamepass. Why take something mediocre to start with and completely ruin it?

Also, for those of us who did watch via gamepass and had to watch the local 49er broadcast, what’s the over/under on number of times that the announcers completely botched the name of a player? It sure sounded like they spent all of two minutes trying to learn anything about KC’s depth chart.

Great read. Really looking forward to Chiefs having a real run game, to keep defenses honest, this year.

I don't care that it's preseason and that SF didn't play many starters on D. I was encouraged watching the OL and glad your analysis backs that up. Hope the other rookies are quick learners and can make adjustments (like Smith tonight). Anxious to read your take on Creed. Thought he looked like a veteran on several plays.

If Orlando Brown misses time who starts at LT?

Like the Ravens, my guess is Niang if he proves worthy at RT.

I'm guessing Niang.

I'm wondering if Niang doesn't keep the starting rt

I think they'll debate on that, but IMO it's better to plug Remmers in at a spot you know he can perform.

Good stuff, Seth!

Two small thoughts:

In the stunt play, I think Smith was one additional shot away from putting the end on the ground. I look forward to him mastering the basics so he can get mean.

On Smith's run block loss, do you think Creed helped on the combo long enough? Looked like he left for the backer pretty quickly. (Sorry to impugn your large adult son..)

Thanks Seth. Much of the analysis was beyond me but I appreciated it! Do you think an unsung duo of Thuney and Humphrey might have much to do with the Chiefs' offensive success this year? Looking forward to their breakdown...although very limited snaps, and offensive lines are like QBs in that they typically play every offensive snap and 'feel' the game as it progresses.

Thuney and Humphrey were outstanding especially on the double teams. Watch the Orlando Brown highlights and slide your eyes up to Thuney just dominating

Losing quickly in the interior has been the bugaboo when there has been one. I saw pockets in these two series where I didn't in the past two and most of three years. Had the Niners brought their studs, it probably would have been different, but a great start was on display. They don't have to be perfect because of our quarterback. If we utilize the run game more effectively, the defensive lines will be slowed and the passing game will benefit. I think our last three seasons are amazing considering the lack of investment in the interior offensive line. Last season's offensive line was our weak link long before the Super Bowl and we went 16-1. Now stay healthy and let us dominate our opponents...

Brown has to work in that slide man. The more I see it the more not having a decent slide looks like a liability. Wonder if Nick Bosa would have been able to exploit Brown?

Brown's film last year was better against higher-level competition than Fisher's, despite Fisher having a much better slide. He needs to work on it to be sure, but the idea is that his other high-level traits compensate. Whether it plays out that way, of course, remains to be seen.

Looking forward to the rest of the O-line!!!!!!

Thanks. Even with a small sample size, it is good to look at all the snaps. I came out of the broadcast unimpressed with Smith because the Chiefs struggled running in the red zone all of last season, and on 2nd and three in the red zone, Smith lost and the play was snuffed out. I felt a little better after they converted 3rd and two with another run, but that play left a bad taste in my mouth for Smith. Even just this extra context on another ten or so plays helps me feel better. Thanks!
