Do they keep CEH if they have three other RB who they like more? It’s unclear to me whether they’d have any chance of getting a late round pick for him or whether they’d have to release him outright, but it doesn’t seem like he should be taking a roster spot away from someone who might actually be in KC’s future plan (an extra WR, for example).
TBH, if someone was going to offer a late round pick for Clyde, they would've done it by now. At this point, we're in "waive him and hope someone bites on his salary" territory. I think we're stuck with him under the sunk cost fallacy, unfortunately. We'd probably have an easier time trading Perine (low salary, no guarantees) for a conditional pick...
I agree with you on the field, but I do think the contract situation matters as well. And the bottom line is that unless they are able to trade CEH, they are gaining minimal cap savings by releasing him. The cap savings of releasing CEH right around the cost of a minimum salary. So unless they can get a trade - a Fenton memorial conditional seventh, anyone? - he probably is on the 53. And we do need four backs, especially with no fullback. Pacheco is coming off injury and we want to manage McKinnon carefully.
You have to be starting these articles during the game; there’s no other way you could get them out this fast. Like Troy Polomalu in the Head and Shoulders commercials: “Always working.”
Perine has definitely outplayed every other RB contending for the #3 spot. I don’t see anyone trading for CEH with so many competent RB’s available. If they keep four Perine should be in. But, as pointed out above, cutting Clyde doesn’t gain much cap space and they can’t keep 4 RB’s + 4 TE’s + 7 WRs. Very tough decisions this year.
I just don’t see the logic for keeping or moving/releasing CEH being a cap consideration. His contract is a sunk cost now; they can’t compound issues by keeping him around if he can’t contribute. From what I’ve seen this preseason (and with the obvious caveat that the coaches have seen far more than I have), I’d rather have Pacheco, McKinnon, Perine, and Prince if they’re keeping 4 RB. Those last two aren’t going to count for much against the cap anyway so it’s mostly a wash financially if they did get rid of CEH, and they might actually be able to make a positive impact on the offense or special teams where I haven’t seen that from CEH to this point.
Thanks for the deep dive, Seth. Would Perine have to clear waivers to make it to the PS? Same with Prince. Could they stash one of them on PS if CEH makes the 53?
Don’t think Perine has enough time of service to avoid a waiver claim. Prince for sure. But once they are free agents, they can cut their own deal anywhere. And most PS players can be signed away at any time to a regular 53 roster of their choosing. It seems that most teams prefer their own roster cuts as PS candidates. You have to really shine to be lured to another team.
I am curious what Perine looked like in three seasons with the Dolphins. Is this camp performance a flash in the pan? Look at how Prince has stalled after several months of strong productivity.
With so many other spots where it looks like they need to keep one more than usual, CEH shouldn't make the team. Every time he gets a handoff I'm floored if he does something better than replacement level with it. He's been in the right spot for some TDs, but I don't know if there's any real skill there --- MAYBE the slightest bit of chemistry with Patrick on the scramble drill, like on flip against TB, but overall those are plays anyone could make.
Roll with 3 RB and then Prince and Ealy on the PS. I realize CEH has had some injuries, but...I'll be pretty shocked if it were to come back to bite us.
So many on Twitter and elsewhere act like its a done deal. CEH on the roster and its dumb to suggest otherwise…Contract etc I get it. But if a guy has zero trade value and a GM that has shown the ability to do the best for the team and roster even if it embarasses him (Speaks). Im not so sure. An RB3-4 that has zero special teams value and a questionable athlete doesnt sound like a slam dunk rosterable NFL player.
I think the Chiefs have 5 locks: James, Moore, MVS, Rice, and Toney. It gets dicey after that. Watson has a year of experience here and seems to have Mahome's trust. Powell is a big special teams guy who could have that Kemp "I never play offense but am always on the team" role. (Kemp was on the roster 5 years and had 8 targets) Ross is a big potential guy that we never saw anything from but always heard about until the TD catch yesterday.
I would give him a shot over some of those last guys. But I just watched his best game. I don't see the day to day stuff in practice. Truth is, if guys are even, the game can be the difference, but if they already have a guy firmly slotted behind someone else, a good game is not likely to lift him up.
On the run you showed in the first highlight, I said (out loud, in real time) "Wow, look at that burst!". I think it would be a mistake not to keep him, especially since he seems to be cromulent at pass pro. Prince can be a practice squad guy. CEH can be released if they only keep 3, or an emergency guy (sometimes inactive) if they keep 4.
After the fact: the Chiefs kept CEH for the 53 man roster, and Perine is on the practice squad. I'm guessing they did this because CEH has more experience in the offense; any other reason why they might have done this?

I think you are correct. No one will take him because Im not sure he belongs on an NFL roster at this point. He certainly hasn't earned a spot here.
Perine looks great! Thanks for the write up Seth!
"think of speed/burst as having a baseline “you must be this tall to ride the roller coaster”"
Says the man who has children to use this analogy.

If it were up to me, I think I’d have to cut CEH.
If they want to 4 RBs cut CEH and keep Prince. CEH just looks so slow.

Who are the “real” Perine and Prince?
I think he has the potential to be the number 2 back worth McKinnon 3. Ceh ought to be cut but he prob stays as the 4th back.

Perine looks great. I will be really bummed if Marsette doesn’t make it though. Who’s on the bubble and could be cut if he’s in?

Also, courtesy of Arrowhead Pride (who is still predicting the Chiefs keep 7 WR) the Chiefs have never kept more than 6 in the Reid era.
Nate also had the Chiefs keeping 7 WRs in his last roster projection article after the Browns game.
