Wanya Morris film review; Uh oh, someone control my optimism...
Looking at every snap taken by the Chiefs' rookie tackle in his first extensive action against a tough opponent.
There were very few fun story lines that emerged from the Chiefs’ loss to the Packers on Sunday. That much was probably obvious from the very first thing I wrote the next day. It was, all in all, a frustrating loss in a season that has seen it share of maddening moments.
(Side note: One of those frustrating moments, the Mahomes/Moore INT, has been looked at more closely in a way I think everyone should at least check out. While I believe the route was poor due to unnecessary hesitation at the start, there’s an argument to be made that adjusting for a back shoulder was the right call as well and blame should be shared)
Of course, you know me; I like to find at least one fun thing to look at from every game. And one of my very favorite things happens to be looking at offensive line play, particularly for young players whom we haven’t seen in action yet.
Enter Wanya Morris.
The Chiefs’ rookie tackle saw his first extensive snap count on Sunday, filling in for an injured Donovan Smith (who tried to go but was clearly in pain and struggling). And he had enough noticeable plays that it seemed only right to take a look at how he did in his first “real” NFL action.
As ever, the only way to really know the truth about an offensive lineman is to go through their snaps and see how often they win/lose, while figuring out what their strengths and weaknesses are. Highlights/lowlights matter, but it’s what happens consistently that’s most important.
In case you’ve forgotten, the way I review/chart OL play is for wins, losses, and neutral snaps against the pass and run, while also looking at (in cases of pass protection) pressures/hits/sacks allowed. It’s a way to separate how the lineman performed from the rest of the offense and isolate how he played personally.
One game is a small sample size, to be sure. But it was at least interesting to review Morris’s snaps and get an idea as to how the rookie tackle is developing… and to be honest, he played well enough (again, in a SMALL sample size) that I have some questions about how things should look moving forward, especially if Smith is still working through an injury.
