These are the Good Old Days for Chiefs fans
Patrick Mahomes did it again in a (of course) weird game, and the entire NFL world could only shake its head.
Everyone knew what was about to happen.
You knew. I knew. The thousands of fans at Arrowhead Stadium knew. The announcers knew. Patrick Mahomes knew. And yes, even Baker Mayfield knew.
As soon as the coin toss went Kansas City’s way to start off overtime, the game was over. The Chiefs were going to win, the Bucs were going to lose.
It’s odd to say, and yet not. Winning the coin toss, of course, meant (in the regular season) that the Chiefs could win the game with a touchdown and never let Mayfield and his offense (who were having a good night against Spags’ defense) see the ball again. And anyone who has been following the league since 2018 knows that when you put Mahomes and the Chiefs in a situation like that, they are as close to a sure thing as anything we’ve ever seen in the NFL.
What followed was as predictable as it was incredible. The Chiefs marched down the field on a 10-play, 70-yard drive in which they didn’t even face a 3rd down until they were at the 2-yard-line (a 3rd and 1 that they not only converted, but scored on a tough run from Kareem Hunt). The Bucs’ defense had little to offer at that point, and I’d argue that the mental aspect was nearly as much a part of that as the physical. Knowing that you’re fighting a battle that you’re almost certain to lose takes a toll, especially when you’ve already done so much to just have even a chance.
There’s a lot to analyze about the Chiefs’ win over the Bucs that propelled them to 8-0 and kept them far ahead of the field in the AFC. DeAndre Hopkins was exceptional. Travis Kelce was Travis Kelce. Mahomes’ play looks as good as it has all season. And on the negative side of things, the OL and Xavier Worthy struggled while the defense played its first “meh” game of the season. But I don’t want to talk about any of that today. Today, I want to talk about the forest, not the trees.
Because every now and then, it’s important to remind you (and myself) what we’re living through right now.
My old friend (and
head honcho) BJ Kissel has launched a product line for KCSN that states “these are the good ole’ days.” I love the truth of that statement and what it represents. And last night, we got a reminder at just how special this time is for Chiefs fans. And not just from the team itself, but from the leaguewide reaction to yet another “they can’t keep getting away with this” moment from a team knocking on the door of being the greatest dynasty the NFL has ever seen. And for those of us who are terminally online (not a good thing), we got to watch the entire football world bemoan the greatness of Mahomes and the Chiefs. It was glorious to experience. It’s a glorious time to be a Chiefs fan. Let’s talk about it.
