The ten most fun moments of the 2024-25 Chiefs season
It was a frustrating season at times, and didn't end how we wanted. But there were LOTS of fun moments to remember.
One of the more unfortunate things about memory is how inconsistent it is. We tend to take a couple of “big picture” memories away from things and (mostly) forget about the smaller moments that made up the events we experience.
This is true in many areas of life, from education to marriage to parenting. We walk away with a certain group of memories (sorting them unconsciously in terms of their importance and in their timing) and others get somewhat left behind. Those memories are THERE, somewhere in the back of our brain, but they aren’t readily available unless called upon intentionally.
(This phenomenon is one that I’m feeling very strongly this week, as we leave for Florida to do a college tour with my second oldest child. He’s almost 17, and I haven’t the faintest idea where the time went. It’s a truly bizarre thing, the way time goes by when you have kids. And so many of the memories fall by the wayside as you just try and make it through… unless you’re VERY intentional about grabbing onto and then hanging onto those moments)
This issue with our memories is one reason for the “guys naming dudes” sports conversation meme. We love just naming players that we used to watch because it sparks memories that we had somewhat let go of. Right now, as you read this, you may not have thought about Brian Waters in years. But as soon as I mention him you likely have some play where he sprung Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson, or Jamaal Charles for a big gain. And you’ll smile. The memory was there, it was just dormant because you were too busy letting the most important things take precedence in your brain.
This is why, every offseason, I write about the most fun moments of the preceding Chiefs’ season. Because of the way we’re wired (especially when it comes to sports), so many memories get pushed to the bottom of our subconscious. This is especially true in seasons that end badly (which, for the current iteration of the Chiefs, is a Super Bowl loss… something we shouldn’t take for granted). We tend to remember the main highlights of the season, the results of games, and the way we felt during and after the games. But specific moments? Those can get a bit lost in the ether.
One of my jobs in this business is to try and help you maximize every bit of fun you can out of this very silly sport where the ball is not round (h/t Nate Taylor). And so, now that some of the sting has faded from the Super Bowl loss, it feels like the right time to think about some of the most fun moments of the 2024/25 Chiefs season.
What’s the criteria? There is none other than “fun.” Generally speaking, what I’m going for is a moment in time that brought significant joy in a memorable way, even if that memory didn’t necessarily remain after a week or two during the grind of a long regular season (the analogy of how you lose a lot of moments in the chaos of raising a 17-year-old when compared to how you lose a lot of moments during a 17-game regular season is a tad too real for me, if I’m being honest). Some of these moments probably stayed right at the forefront of your memory. Some of them you probably forgot about until you say, “Oh yeah, that was awesome.”
So that’s the goal… to recall some, “Oh yeah, that was awesome” moments. Let’s talk about the most fun moments of the Chiefs 2024/25 season. Keep in mind these are subjective, and I’ll probably miss some. Let me know what they were in the comments, because it’s FUN to talk about this stuff.
Mahomes trucks a 49er
I’ll be honest, I’d forgotten about this moment in a sea of stressful regular season games. But remember the time Mahomes trucked a safety on his way into the end zone on 4th down against the Niners?
That was awesome.
It’s even more awesome when you remember the context in which it occurred (again, that’s something that we lose as time goes by).
