Patrick Mahomes Week 7 film review; The fire-breathing dragon returns
The Chiefs quarterback had himself a day against the Chargers.
You know the drill. Every week (well, most weeks) I’ll be charting every dropback by Patrick Mahomes this year, just like I’ve done for… well, his whole career. As I laid out in the Week 1 film review (which is unlocked so you can see the methodology in more detail), statistical analysis of quarterbacks, especially in small sample sizes, doesn’t really tell us the whole story or even most of it. So I chart things that the QB can control, such as accuracy, pocket presence, franchise throws, going through reads, and more.
This has been an “OK” Patrick Mahomes season. He’s had moments of up and down play, but (other than against a completely overmatched Bears defense) he hasn’t been the devastator of worlds that we’ve grown accustomed to over the years. Let me be clear, he’s been a top 3 quarterback at worst (and perhaps the best in the league), and it’s absurd the nits we pick with greatness at a certain point, but he hadn’t had one of THOSE games yet against a non-Bears team.
Until Now.
Mahomes had his best outing of 2023 on Sunday against the Chargers, a defense that has given him trouble occasionally throughout his career. And it wasn’t just a matter of him putting up stats (though those were impressive). Mahomes was lights-out overall while making almost no mistakes on the day.
Let’s talk about how Mahomes used his feet and the threat of his feet to manipulate Los Angeles, as well as balanced being a playmaker with taking what the defense gave him on a day they gave him… well, quite a bit.
