Patrick Mahomes Week 6 film review, and a little fun with the offensive line
Looking at what Mahomes did against Washington, and enjoying some road graders
I’m on a very brief weekend vacation with the family, and time is finite, so let’s get right to it shall we?
Every week I chart each snap by Patrick Mahomes in order to gauge what he did vs what the stat line says he did. Why? Quite simply, because stats lie, and the smaller the sample size the worse it is for a quarterback. Here’s a simple example from the Washington game.
Here, Mahomes is reading the linebacker here, knowing that with the coverage being played Hill will have an opening inside if the RPO works (watch the linemen to verify it’s an actual RPO and not play action) to drag the linebacker to his left (the offense’s right). He makes the right read and an accurate throw with great velocity despite a defender in his face. It’s a an above-average play by Mahomes.
Of course, it ends in an incomplete pass that will negatively effect his stats (even in-depth ones like QBR, EPA per play, etc), through no fault of his own. Hill slips on the route and that puts him behind where the ball goes, and the ball is almost picked off. It’s similar to the one of Mahomes’ interceptions later in the game, where a well-placed ball bounced off Hill’s hands and ended up in the hands of a defender.
Plays like this happen every game, and while the general idea behind statistical analysis is that they’ll even out over time (with “good luck” plays breaking things in favor of a quarterback to balance out the bad luck plays), but in a single game that’s not always (or even often) the case. And so, we chart every snap.
If you are unfamiliar with how I chart and write about quarterback play, the Week 1 review explains the methodology and reasoning, as well as the definitions used. The goal, as ever, is to separate the QB play from what is around the QB to get a better gauge on how he did on his own. You can find the previous views by clicking the links below:

Let’s look at the numbers, then talk some Mahomes. After that, we’ll watch the OL play a little bully ball, just for fun.
