Orlando Brown Jr. vs the Bengals; Part of the problem
Looking at every snap by the Chiefs' LT against Cincinnati and examining how he contributed to their struggles on offense... with an eye towards the future.
Look, I’m on vacation, and it’s a beautiful day here. So I’m going to get straight to the point; Orlando Brown Jr. had a bad day against the Bengals. And that’s not the only bad day he’s had this season.
But I want to focus on Sunday, and what happened with Brown as the Chiefs dropped a crucial game that took them out of the driver’s seat for the number 1 seed in the AFC.
On first review, it was no secret that it appeared Brown (along with others on the offensive line) had a bad game against the Bengals. But, as ever, we can’t know such things until we take a closer look. And so I went back and charted every snap by Brown, looking at wins/losses as a pass and run blocker, neutral snaps, and pressures/hits/sacks allowed.
Often, what has happened in the past when I reviewed Brown’s snaps in this manner is that it was revealed he played better than I had initially thought. While his losses have traditionally been ugly, they’ve been more rare than I had assumed as he generally pushed rushers wide and rarely lost inside. And I usually walked away more encouraged than I’d started out.
This isn’t one of those times.
Let’s talk about Brown’s snaps against the Bengals, the problematic way(s) he was losing despite some help, and the issue that creates for him and the Chiefs (one game or not) this offseason and beyond.
