A loss to the Colts that can best be described as disgusting revealed numerous issues Kansas City needs to address. Which ones are flukes, and which ones could sink them?

You know it’s a bad game when the most positive thing I (an optimist at heart) could think of to say to start this off is “it’s only one week.”

And hey, that’s technically true. Every loss only counts as a single defeat. They aren’t measured in level of cringe. And thank goodness for a Chiefs squad that brought numerous wince-worthy moments as it dropped an inexcusable game to the Colts that was supposed to be their easiest matchup for… well, most of the season.

The mistakes were so widespread that they can’t all be properly described by a single tweet.

In today’s loss KC: dropped a punt inside their 5, had a FG & PAT, blew a fake FG, had a dropped TD by Pro Bowl TE, allowed go-ahead drive to continue when Pro Bowl DT picked up unsportsmanlike conduct flag following a sack that would’ve set up a 4th and 14. They deserved the L.

Skyy Moore muffed punt -7 points Missed field goal -3 points Fake field goal -3 points Chris Jones penalty -7 points Mental errors cost them a double digit win today. Also, we shall never take the butt kicker for granted again! #ChiefsKingdom

The short version is that the Chiefs, in a game they should have won easily, lost ground in a hotly contested AFC and missed their chance to grab a little distance early against the AFC West. And they did so by failing in almost every way imaginable, in every scenario possible, and in ways that call into question several foundational issues with the team, from coaching to the players to the front office. Even Mahomes missed on what would have been a big touchdown early.

In other words, it was a bad day. Which is what is required when a team loses despite its quarterback (not that Mahomes played particularly well) is much statistically efficient than his opponent.

Needless to say the team with that QB performance on the top vs the one on the bottom should not lose that game

There are so many concerns that emerge after such a devastatingly inept loss that it becomes easy to lose track of them. It also becomes difficult to discern which ones are real and which ones are more of a fluke. With that in mind, I’m going to look at the areas of concern today’s loss laid bare and discuss which ones I believe are more of long-term concern vs single-game flukes. These range from offensive line play to the wide receiver room to team discipline to special teams to… Well, you know what, let’s just get to the list, shall we?

Nothing like a countdown of horrors after an awful loss in which nearly everyone is to blame. Let’s talk about it, starting with the worst special teams performance I’ve ever seen.
