Keondre Coburn film review: Is he this year's diamond in the late rounds?
Looking at the college film of the Chiefs' newest defensive tackle.
I’m ready to get hurt again.
Every year, a late-round pick stands out on film and makes me (and perhaps others) wonder how they managed to slip in the draft. Every year, I get my hopes up that this player will be able to beat the odds and contribute immediately, nevermind how rare that is in the NFL for late-round picks. And most years, I get disappointed.
But not every year. Some years, a guy like Trey Smith or Jaylen Watson steps in and is able to contribute immediately as the college tape (both Smith and Watson had terrific college tape, in case you didn’t know) translates to pro results. It’s not often, but it’s happened often enough in the Brett Veach era that it’s definitely possible. And with that, let’s talk about Keondre Coburn, whose film does not match his draft status and has me ready to get hurt again.
An incredibly stout human being who measured in at 6’ 1 1/2” and 332 pounds, Coburn is built like a barrel filled with cement and often played like one in college. This was true as early as 2020, when he was already consuming double teams without giving ground more often than not.
To see what the Chiefs have in their 6th round rookie, I went to the tape and looked at multiple games from 2020 and 2022, examining what he showed in the following trait areas: Explosion/1st step, agility/athleticism, upper body power, lower body power, pass rush chops, and awareness.
Let’s talk Coburn, who has an opportunity to get on the field in a specific niche if he can translate what he did in college to the pros.
