In Veach we trust; Super Bowl LVII was the Chiefs GM's finest moment to date
Looking at how Brett Veach has shaped Kansas City into a winner now with a bright future later.
“It’s not really his roster.”
After the 2019 season, following the Chiefs’ first Super Bowl win in 50 years, praise and applause was showered on virtually everyone involved in the organization. From Clark Hunt on down, the contributions of all were lauded and magnified.
There was one person, though, who received only partial credit. General manager Brett Veach, having taken over the team prior to the 2017 season, was certainly given some credit for some of the savvy moves he had made to help push the Chiefs over the top. But a common refrain among fans and analysts was that many of the key components of the roster were not Veach’s “guys,” and that the bigger difference from the previous season was the addition of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. The idea was that the most important players on the team (Mahomes, Kelce, Jones, Hill, Schwartz, Fisher) were not “his” and that credit rather belonged to former GM John Dorsey.
Ignoring whether there’s merit to that argument, let’s now fast forward to right this second. The Chiefs are once again on top of the football world in a season that (as Veach himself pointed out at the parade) some pundits viewed as a season to reset or rebuild. And the roster is now indisputably, unquestionably his.
The 3 names at the top might be the same (Mahomes, Kelce, and Jones), but the rest of the roster has been nearly completely reformed since the last Super Bowl win, and certainly since the time Veach took over as general manager.
And so, it’s time to appreciate the moves Veach made to put the Chiefs in position to once again win it all. There are a few that I’ll go deep in-depth on, but frankly there are so many terrific moves (including how he’s handled some of the stars in KC) that I’ll have to be brief on some.
Let’s talk Brett Veach and the best moves he made that led Kansas City back to the promised land, starting with the draft. And that’s going to take a minute, because he’s on an absolute heater as of late.
