If I were Brett Veach, Part 4: Free Agency and living in the moment
I look at the free agents I would pursue and discuss the balance of future planning vs taking a shot during a title window.
We’re back!
Now that a flurry of franchise tags, trades, and extensions have left our heads spinning, we’re in a position where we can sit down and think about what’s next. And what’s next, of course, is free agency. That’s right, folks, it’s time for “if I were Brett Veach, part 4.”
(waits for the exuberant cheering and screaming with joy to die down)
Let’s recap where we’ve been so far:
In Part 1, we talked about how malleable the salary cap can be and made 3 cost-saving moves to buy some cap room to play with, as well as discussed the biggest problems the current roster faces.
In Part 2, we looked at in-house free agents I would let walk if I were Veach, regardless of price.
And finally, in part 3, we looked at in-house free agents I’d keep around and some general contract parameters I’d use. It’s worth noting that the only free agent I labeled as a “gotta have ‘em” was Orlando Brown, who the Chiefs used the franchise tag on recently. I broke down Brown’s film a little while back, looking at every single snap in 8 games and looking at how he succeeds and where he can improves. It’s unlocked and available for anyone to read, because I just love you all that much.
But now, we move into the “real” offseason, where the team can really start to look at trying to shore up weak spots and/or improve on strengths. It’s free agency, a time where everyone will take team-friendly deals and all the biggest names will land exactly where we want them!
Well, not exactly. BUT, it represents a significant opportunity for the team to get better, and so today I’m going to write about what I would do in free agency if I were Brett Veach. I’ll also talk about the current window the Chiefs have in front of them and why that colors the way I’d do things.
