George Karlaftis and the Chiefs complementary pass rush are heating up. One step remains
Kansas City's pass rush has looked better over the last few weeks. Let's talk about how, and the final step they need to take.
The day job is basically killing me this week, and as I sit here in my office on a Saturday I don’t have as much time as I’d like to talk Chiefs. So I’m going to make this short and sweet; With Charles Omenihu now on board and George Karlaftis taking a step forward (the latter of which was written about by
colleague Matt Lane), Steve Spagnuolo may have finally found the pass rushing front four he’s been looking for since becoming the Chiefs defensive coordinator.Sunday’s loss to the Broncos (gross) carried very few positives on the offensive side of the ball, but the defense performed about as well as could be expected in a game where they were forced to defend short fields time and again following turnovers. And one of those reasons was the pass rush.
Let’s talk briefly about complementary pass rush (one of my favorite topics) and how Omenihu’s arrival combined with Karlaftis’ development has changed the math for the Chiefs defense, at least through a couple of games. I’ll also talk briefly about where we need to see the pass rush improve if they want to take a step from “decent” to “dangerous.”
