Chiefs Super Bowl preview part 3; How Andy Reid could attack the Eagles
How should Reid go after a talented defense? I have some ideas.
The Chiefs are playing in the Super Bowl… again.
What a strange time it is to be a Chiefs fan. By once again making it to the NFL’s biggest stage, Kansas City has solidified themselves as the most successful franchise over the NFL’s last 5 seasons. Even in a year that was to be a “retooling” (not a rebuild, of course!), where they overhauled the defense and made a big change on offense, all roads lead back to Mahomes and company taking a shot at the Lombardi.
And so, we’re celebrating by previewing the big game in a 3-part preview. In part 1, I wrote about some questions I have regarding the Eagles’ defense based on their 2022 opponents. In Part 2, I looked at how I think Steve Spagnuolo should approach the game from the defensive side of the ball. Today, in part 3, I’ll be talking about the Chiefs offense and some ways they could try and attack a terrific Eagles defense.
Sometimes the best defense is a good offense.
Unlike Part 2 of our series, in which that opening line made no sense because we were talking about defense… it applies today. Because today, we’re talking about Andy Reid, the Chiefs’ offense and their matchup against the Eagles, which is probably the defining chess match of Super Bowl LVII.
Everyone knows the basics here. The Chiefs have the best offense in the league by a healthy margin. The Eagles have one of the best defenses in the league. We know about Philly’s pass rush, which has been historic. We know about the Chiefs’ relentless efficiency. We know the stars on both sides. What isn’t known, which I wrote about in Part 1 of our Super Bowl preview series, is how the Eagles will perform against an elite offense.
But tossing aside the numbers, what will this matchup look like? On paper (and on film), the Eagles have a highly imposing pass rush and some terrific corners who they trust to get things done on an island. They like to play quarters defense and try to take away shot plays while allowing their talented front to win. And, since the addition of Linval Joseph, they’ve been quite stout against the run when teams have opted to go that route. Their methodology has been, by and large, a highly successful strategy.
So what can Andy Reid do to try and put the Chiefs in the best position possible? In the same way we looked at the gameplan prior to the AFC Championship, I have a few ways I think Kansas City can attack the Eagles that I believe would give them the best chance to continue their dominance on offense.
One last Super Bowl LVII preview. Let’s go.
