Chiefs rookie safety Chamarri Conner made a big jump vs the Bills
Looking at some of the ways Conner contributed in a tough spot. They may have found ANOTHER contributor in later rounds.
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before; Brett Veach may have found a solid secondary player who can contribute right away..
If there’s one thing that Veach and the Chiefs coaching staff have shown over the last 4-5 years, it has been the ability to identify corners and safeties and coach them up into at least contributors on the defensive side of the ball. Charvarius Ward, Juan Thornhill, Rashad Fenton, L’Jarius Sneed, Trent McDuffie, Bryan Cook, Jaylen Watson, Joshua Williams, even a cheap veteran signing like Mike Edwards… Kansas City has consistently found guys who can play and gotten them to the point of being at least be average players (like Fenton) to significantly more.
It’s too early to say if Chamarri Conner is the next success story in the secondary for the Chiefs. But against Buffalo, the rookie took a big step forward as injuries forced him into a larger role than he’s had to play all season.
Conner played over 50% of the snaps for the first time in his career Sunday (his previous high was 30%, and no other game had he been even above 22%), and he showed some promising growth from one week to the next compared to how he performed against Green Bay following Bryan Cook’s injury.
Obviously, the play that received the most attention was the above snap, where he picked off Josh Allen. And it’s an encouraging snap that we’ll break down in detail. But he also had other promising snaps where he showed the ability to play all over the field, something that Steve Spagnuolo loves in his safeties.
Let’s talk about Conner’s film from Sunday, where he showed the ability to be a contributor now and in the future, and where he needs to continue to develop.
