Anatomy of a Super Bowl play(s): Andy Reid cooking vs the 49ers
Looking at a few of my favorite play calls by the Chiefs HC in SB LVIII
So far, free agency has been a snoozefest for the Chiefs. They’ve re-signed a few of their guys, (I’m incredibly happy to see Chris Jones is a Chief for life, or at the very least the next three years), seen some leave in free agency (so long Willie Gay and Nick Allegretti, congrats to the latter for getting the bag and I hope the former does next year!)… and basically nothing else other than grabbing Irv Smith Jr. as a potential TE3.
I’m tired of waiting for new film to review, so let’s have some fun while we wait and talk about how Andy Reid was able to pick apart the 49ers defense down the stretch in Super Bowl LVIII.
I’ve already written about how Patrick Mahomes was every version of a winning quarterback throughout the Super Bowl, morphing to what the situation required. But I don’t want to overlook the job Reid did in probing and prodding at a really tough 49ers defense until he found some tendencies and started to hammer away at them.
So with that in mind, I thought it would be fun to look at some of my favorite calls by Reid in Super Bowl LVIII. Play calling is an art as much as a science. The play design is the scientific part, as is trying to decipher tendencies of an opponent and learn how often they do this/that. But knowing when to call what look, factoring in the context of an entire game? There’s a certain amount of gut instinct that.
And few are able to do it like Reid.
